Background

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line launched DisneyBand+, a waterproof wristband for accessing staterooms, charging food and drinks, boarding, and enjoying surprises.

Guests can order bands to be shipped home during the Pre-Arrival stage or purchase them onboard at select merchandise locations, where a Cast Member will link and activate the band.

Discovery

To enable Cast Members to link and activate bands, my assignment was to explore, "How might we create a multifunctional enterprise application for Crew Members to support Guests with all features of DisneyBand+?"

The business supplied device capabilities and essential requirements, which I utilized to develop wireframes for different design options.

Crew Member Target Personas

During the discovery phase, I created target personas for Crew Members using the device and application.

The Guest Services persona represents front desk staff who are available 24/7 to assist Guests with band setup and transfers. The Embarkation Operations persona helps Guests at the port by linking and encoding bands for stateroom access. The Merchandise persona assists Guests in setting up their bands right after purchase.

Interface Design

I refined the wireframes based on initial tests with Crew Members, progressing to high-fidelity designs. By integrating elements from the Guest-facing UI into the Crew application, I enhanced its visual appeal and shifted our team's perspective on enterprise applications.

Production Testing

Before the launch of DisneyBand+ onboard, I had the opportunity to test the Connected Experiences app at Port Canaveral.

My team distributed more than 300 bands and informational brochures to Guests for initial testing. The brochure detailed the test, the capabilities of DisneyBand+, and included FAQs, all of which I designed for the test cruise. Throughout the day, I utilized the app I designed to connect Guests' bands to their accounts.

The day proved to be successful, with positive feedback regarding the app's usability, and it was gratifying to see my application in action.

Reflections

The Connected Experiences app was my second project at Disney and my first solo endeavor, concentrating on creating visually engaging applications for Crew Members.

Over the course of two years, I observed its evolution from concept to production, and since its launch in April 2023, Crew-to-Guest transaction times have been under 30 seconds.
